Strength Training on a GLP-1: Keep the Muscle, Lose the Rest

GLP-1 medications have changed how America loses weight. Polls now put roughly one in ten American adults on one, and if you're among them, you already know the headline part works: appetite quiets down, and the scale moves faster than it ever did on willpower alone.

Here's the part the prescription doesn't cover: the scale can't tell you what you're losing. And on a GLP-1, that question matters more than the number itself.

The muscle problem nobody warns you about

When weight comes off quickly and food intake drops sharply, the body doesn't only burn fat. Without a reason to keep it, it sheds muscle too. Research on rapid weight loss keeps landing on the same concern: a meaningful share of the weight lost on these medications can be lean mass rather than fat, especially without resistance training and adequate protein along the way.

Why that matters:

  • Muscle is your metabolism. Lose it, and you burn less at rest, which makes the weight easier to regain the moment the medication stops.
  • Muscle is your strength and stability. "Lighter but weaker" is a real outcome, and it shows up in energy, posture, balance and how you feel climbing stairs.
  • Muscle protects your bones. Resistance training is one of the best-documented ways to maintain bone density during weight loss.
  • Muscle is the shape. Most people picture themselves leaner and toned, not simply smaller. Muscle is the difference between those two pictures.

Strength training is the answer, and it takes less than you think

The fix is not hours of cardio. It's the opposite: lifting gives your body a reason to keep the muscle while the medication handles the appetite. Pair resistance training with enough protein and the research keeps showing the same thing: people preserve far more lean mass, keep their metabolism working, and end up looking and feeling the way they hoped when they started.

Two or three focused strength sessions a week is enough to send that signal. Full-body work, progressively loaded, with a plan that respects where you're starting from. That's it. It is very achievable, even if you've never touched a barbell.

How to protect your muscle on a GLP-1

  1. Tell your trainer what's going on. Your medication changes your appetite, your energy and your goals. A coach who knows that builds you a smarter plan. (Keep your prescriber in the loop too; we're your training team, not your medical team.)
  2. Lift 2 to 3 times a week. Full-body strength sessions, form first, weights that progress as you do.
  3. Prioritize protein. With a smaller appetite, protein has to come first on the plate so your muscle has raw material to hold onto.
  4. Track composition, not just weight. A body composition scan tells you exactly how much of your loss is fat and how much is muscle, so you can adjust before months of progress hide a problem the scale can't see.

What this looks like at VIVE

This is exactly the kind of training VIVE is built for, and you don't have to figure any of it out alone.

  • Two free Welcome Workouts. Every new member starts with two complimentary 60-minute sessions with a certified trainer: tell them your goals and your situation, and leave with a plan built for it.
  • InBody body composition scans. Your first scan is free with your first session. It breaks your weight into muscle and fat so you can watch the right number move, scan after scan.
  • A real strength floor. Racks with deadlift platforms, dumbbells to 100 pounds, and machine lines that make learning to lift approachable, in a club that's never unnecessarily crowded.
  • Coached options at every level. One-on-one personal training, Arena LIFT small group strength sessions, and 40+ weekly classes to cover the movement and energy side.

If you're on a GLP-1, or talking to your doctor about one, the strongest move you can make is to start lifting now, so every pound you lose is the kind you wanted to lose.
